I love the Bible but often feel like in many ways I don’t engage with it the way most people say I should. I know it’s what I’m meant to do and for a long time it seemed I read it because I had to and I struggle with it, in lots of ways.
Some time ago I discovered that the best way for me to engage God’s word, was not through compulsion or a feeling that this is what I’m supposed to be doing (like that was ever going to work) but rather by discovering what works for me.
I love the idea of story and I always loved the stories in the Bible. A while ago I began to see the Bible not as a collection of short stories but rather as an insight into God’s story. Even better than that, I began to ask where does my story fit into God’s story. It was at this point it came alive.
Instead of failing to read small bite size piece every day and feeling guilty, I began reading large slabs a couple of times a week, digesting the big picture and asking lots of questions. For me that works and I love it. For you it may be something different, the secret though is not to churn through under compulsion & guilt but instead to discover how is our Creators story going to resonate in your life, so that your life can resonate in His story.
